USA

August 2017 - Oregon

We visited the united state of Oregon, and we loved every minute of it. In the USA we met exactly one Trump supporter, and we saw zero guns; instead we met wonderful friends and family, plus we witnessed a total solar eclipse! Corvallis is the home of my aunt Wendy, a place she chose to live because most of the people are well educated. My mother met us there for the eclipse - a totally cosmic family reunion! Portland is the home of Footbag (Hacky Sack), and the city hosted the 2017 World Footbag Championships, an amazing event, especially the grand reunion of the "footbag family" overflowing with skill, passion and love. Props go to our New Zealand friend TJ for taking seventh place in Open Footbag Freestyle!

Yeah, so America gets a bad rap these days but good people are widespread. That which we observed in Oregon for three weeks was overwhelmingly nice ;-) Even the homeless people we met were friendly and spoke of the contrast between Portland and say, Los Angeles in terms of having a positive culture. Oregon is the opposite of Trump-land, a liberal oasis. Hopefully the anti-Trump backlash will motivate the non-voting majority to vote in the 2018 "midterm" elections... Meanwhile in New Zealand we have good news from our recent election, we changed our government for the better, now a coalition led by Labour and including the Greens. Let's celebrate some good news - and then go make some more.
